He trained in classical painting and has worked in oil since his student years, building a practice that sits between observation and invention. His portraits begin with long looking: a sitting, a set of photographs, a conversation about what the painting is for and where it will hang.
The work is unhurried. A single canvas can take weeks, built up in layers so the light in the skin has somewhere to come from. Subjects are usually people he knows, or people he has come to know in the course of painting them.
A painting should still be worth looking at once the likeness stops being the point.
Alongside commissioned portraits he paints independent work, exhibited privately and held in collections across the region.
Commissions are discussed by email or in person, and finished paintings are prepared and delivered wherever they are going.
